Wesser admits Inglis could be a No.1

South Sydney veteran Rhys Wesser says it's crucial Greg Inglis is given more opportunity with the ball, conceding the star signing could be a rival for his fullback jersey.

There's little suggestion Wesser's position is under threat, but Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy on Sunday said he would have played Inglis in the No.1 jersey at the Storm if it wasn't for Billy Slater.

Wesser agreed Inglis would make a dynamic fullback, adding the Queensland and Test talent would probably make a go of any position on the park.

"Greg can play a few positions and one of them would be fullback, so whatever suits the side. That depends on our coach," said Wesser.

"I think he could definitely play not only fullback but five-eighth, lock, second row.

" ... There's not too many positions he can't play and he would be a potent player in any jersey."

Inglis was solid without being brilliant on debut and critics argue Souths need to find away to up his involvement.

Wesser agreed it was up to him and halves John Sutton and Chris Sandow to ensure Inglis gets more opportunity against Canterbury this Sunday.

"I think the more ball obviously Greg gets the better our chances of winning are," he said.

"If we can get him the ball and let him play some football, which we all know he can play, I'm sure we're all going to benefit."

Souths have suffered some heavy blows on the injury front, but the return of former Queensland State of Origin and Test hardman Michael Crocker will be a timely boost.

Minor knee surgery kept Crocker out of the trials, but he's now fully recovered and his experience will be invaluable for a pack which has lost Sam Burgess (shoulder), Ben Lowe (foot) and Scott Geddes (Achilles).

The results of Burgess' shoulder scans came back better than expected on Monday and the enforcer is hopeful of making his NRL return in less than a month.

It was feared the Englishman might require further surgery and miss up to four months of football, but the 22-year-old says he should be back in 2-4 weeks.

"I'll work hard on some rehab and we'll go from there," said Burgess.

"The results have come back pretty positively this morning.

"A little bit of damage in the back of the shoulder where it was damaged before but we're confident that with an intense rehab program I'll be ready to go in 2-4 weeks."

Geddes has been ruled out for the season with his ruptured Achilles and Lowe will miss 3-4 months after having a pin inserted in his fractured foot.

Souths received more bad news on Monday when they were issued with a $15,000 breach notice for allowing 14 men onto the field for four tackles during Friday's loss to the Sydney Roosters.

"The incident should serve as a reminder to all clubs of the importance of ensuring the interchange rules are adhered to, no matter how urgent a situation may appear on the field," NRL director of football operations Nathan McGuirk said.

Souths have five days to respond before the fine is imposed.
