Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek has decided to start with Harry Kewell in Saturday's World Cup match against Ghana in one of four changes to the side beaten by Germany.

Kewell has been included along with Brett Holman, Mark Bresciano and David Carney - a shock selection in place of Scott Chipperfield at left-back.

Richard Garcia has been omitted along with Chipperfield, while injured Vinnie Grella and suspended Tim Cahill were not considered.

In a further boost to Australia, Ghana have also left out first-choice centre-backs John Mensah, of English club Sunderland, and Isaac Vorsah because of injury.

South African-based 19-year-old defender Jonathan Mensah and Lee Addy replace them.

Australia: Mark Schwarzer, Luke Wilkshire, Craig Moore, Lucas Neill, David Carney, Jason Culina, Carl Valeri, Mark Bresciano, Brett Holman, Brett Emerton, Harry Kewell.

Ghana: Richard Kingson, John Pantsil, Lee Addy, Jonathan Mensah, Hans Sarpei, Anthony Annan, Andre Ayew, Kwadmo Asamoah, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Prince Tagoe, Asamoah Gyan.
