Storm will quickly regain crown: King

Ex-Melbourne Storm player Matt King has predicted his tainted former club to be back at the top of the NRL ladder within two years.

The salary-cap cheating Storm aren't expected to be as competitive next year with a departure list that includes superstar Greg Inglis, Jeff Lima, Brett White, Ryan Hoffman, Brett Finch and Aiden Tolman.

But King said his old team's ability to keep on being competitive this year despite playing for no points for the past four months demonstrated the club's culture.

"It says everything, they are great blokes with a great leader and with a great culture," King told AAP.

"I know they have lost half a dozen of their big players but I think within two years they will be back to where they deserve to be." Melbourne finish off their season by hosting Newcastle on Sunday in the knowledge they have won enough matches this season to normally be right in the thick of finals action. The powerful outside back played 91 games for the Storm including their now-erased 2007 grand final.

When King joined Warrington in 2008 they had not won a trophy in 33 years.

Last Sunday, they captured back to back Challenge Cup titles at Wembley Stadium.

The former NSW Origin player credited his wife Kristen for him turning things around in England following a slow start to his career at Wolves.

"That first 12 months was a little bit tricky (and) if it has not been for my wife I would have gone straight home after six months over here," he said.

"She told me, like a good Australian woman, just to keep my head down and bum up and just keep on working hard and I am so glad I have." King will be 31 when his lucrative four-year contract expires at the end of 2011.

"I will definitely be here next year, there are only two teams I would ever play for, Storm and the Wolves. But I can't predict the future," he said.

But before Storm fans get their hopes up, King is pretty content with his lot at Warrington.

"The footy side of things is wonderful. Two trips to Wembley and we are about to hopefully get in a good spot for September and I have a list of countries as long as my arm that I have travelled to this year," he said.

"It is a no-brainer."
