Gold Coast to host Rugby Sevens tournament

The Gold Coast's party atmosphere is being hailed as the perfect accompaniment for its new role as host for the Australian leg of the Rugby Sevens World Series.

The tourist mecca will stage the tournament for the next four years after beating bids from Sydney, Perth and previous hosts Adelaide.

And energy and party atmosphere will be one of the secrets to the tournament's success, says Australian Sevens coach Michael O'Connor.

"There is real energy on the Gold Coast and I am confident that will translate to the stands and in turn to the field," he said.

O'Connor said holding the competition at the rectangular Skilled Park, the home of the NRL's Gold Coast Titans, would also be a key in attracting crowds.

At its home for the past five years, Adelaide Oval, spectators often found themselves quite some distance from the action.

"This is a purpose-built (football) stadium and if we can fill this stadium the atmosphere will be second to none," said O'Connor.

"That has been the experience overseas, even in places like Las Vegas a purpose-built stadium there where the crowd is very close to the action, 15,000 people feels like there's 50,000 in there.

"I think that's what this Gold Coast venue really offers from a team perspective. The boys love playing in front of big crowds and big atmospheres."
