Christensen a rising star of AFL

Geelong youngster Allen Christensen doesn't really care if he gets this week's AFL Rising Star nomination, although the 11-gamer has Cats coach Chris Scott firmly in his corner.

Christensen was in dazzling form for the second-placed Cats at Etihad Stadium on Sunday, kicking two goals and gathering 26 possessions in Geelong's 17.11 (113) to 7.9 (51) win over Richmond.

Scott said he'd be very surprised if Christensen's name wasn't on the AFL's press release as Tuesday's nomination for round 18.

"We thought he was just fantastic last week (against Brisbane) and deserved it," Scott said.

"He certainly deserves it again this week but someone might play better.

"The fact that he has forced his way into our best 22 speaks volumes I think."

Christensen said he felt fortunate to be in the Geelong side at all amongst such star midfielders including Paul Chapman, Joel Selwood, James Kelly and Joel Corey.

"It's amazing what the Geelong midfield is," the 20-year-old Lara product said.

"I can't take it for granted, being in there.

"There's a lot of boys who are still out of the team who can come back in (including Cameron Ling, Steve Johnson and ruckman Brad Ottens).

"You've got to put your best foot forward every week.

"I'm really lucky to be in the team at the moment."

Asked about the rising star snub, Christensen said: "I don't really care.

"I play for Geelong, what more could you want?," he said.

Christensen said Geelong's focus on defence had worked well for the first half as they restricted Richmond to 1.4 (10) to the home side's 11.5 (71).

However, both sides kicked six goals each in the second half.

"The second half was a bit sloppy," he said.

"We've shown we can play really well offensively.

"That's probably our next step, to really get going defensive and shutting down teams."
