Warriors beat Blues in one-day match

Impressive knocks from Phil Jaques and Simon Katich weren't enough to get NSW over the line against Western Australia, the visitors finishing one run short in a thrilling Ford Ranger Cup day-night match at the WACA.

Katich scored 82 and Jaques 83 as NSW reached 8-267 in response to WA's 9-268.

The Warriors' total was set up by keeper-batsman Luke Ronchi who struck 104 while stand-in captain Adam Voges chipped in with 68.

When Jaques was controversially given out attempting a reverse sweep, NSW's chase looked all but over but tail-enders Matthew Nicholson and Nathan Hauritz had other ideas.

Nicholson smashed four boundaries and a six in his innings of 35 and Hauritz made 39 before Hauritz was run out from the second last ball. Eight runs were required from the final delivery, which Grant Cameron hit to substitute fielder Shawn Gillies, who stepped on the rope to hand NSW a six but left the visitors a run shy of the Warriors score.

The Blues made a terrible start to their chase with Ed Cowan and Dominic Thornely dismissed early leaving them 2-9 before Katich and Jaques combined for a 148-run partnership, the biggest of the match.

It was a blistering knock from the usually reserved Katich, his 82 came off just 81 balls and included nine fours. His dismissal sparked a collapse, with Peter Forrest, Grant Lambert and Daniel Smith all out cheaply.

Jaques still had the chance to guide the Blues home, but he paid for his third reserve sweep attempt off Aaron Heal when he edged it onto his boot and it bounced up for keeper Ronchi to easily catch.

Earlier, Ronchi starred when he opened the batting with retired Test star Justin Langer.

He followed up his fine form from Pakistan with the Australian A side with 104 from just 92 balls.

Ronchi had some luck - dropped twice on the way to his century - but struck cleanly, hitting 12 fours, including three from one Mark Cameron over.

Voges was the other star with the bat, hitting a classy 68 from 71 balls in his first game as skipper with Marcus North out with a knee injury.

Langer struggled before being bowled for five by Mark Cameron, while Shaun Marsh, Luke Pomersbach and Test aspirant Chris Rogers made minor contributions.

With Langer opening, Rogers was forced down to bat at six, where he made 18.

His best moment of the match came in the field however, when he made a flying save at deep midwicket in the 48th over to prevent a certain six from Matthew Nicholson.

Rogers' presence of mind to knock the ball back into the field of play saved five runs and ultimately proved a match winner.

Both sides meet in a Pura Cup game starting at the WACA on Sunday.
