Glory lift for home win against United

Perth Glory have beaten Adelaide United 3-2 at Members Equity Stadium in an entertaining match that has lifted the home side from the bottom of the A-League.

With both teams out of finals contention the shackles were released and an attractive and attacking match resulted.

Adelaide opened the scoring after eight minutes through Bruce Djite, but James Robinson soon levelled for Perth.

Nikita Rukavytsya gave the lead to the Glory just before half-time, but Adelaide captain Travis Dodd made it 2-2 early in the second half.

The scoring rounded out when Jamie Harnwell put Perth back in front with half an hour remaining.

Glory coach David Mitchell elected to leave out captain Simon Colosimo, with Jamie Coyne handed the armband in a sure sign the sometime Socceroo will not be at Perth next year, with his most likely destination Sydney.

Adelaide came into the game with their finals hopes ended when the Jets beat the Mariners, but looked better than they had in some weeks with the return of Cassio, Robert Cornthwaite and Nathan Burns.

Adelaide were first to score when Djite pounced on some poor Perth defending to put it past `keeper Jason Petkovic.

Burns had a shot blocked just eight minutes in, but Djite swooped on it and hit it cleanly to nail his fifth goal of the season.

Just four minutes later Perth equalised when Robinson got on the end of a clever ball from Billy Celeski to put it into the net.

Perth dominated the rest of the half, but it took until injury time before their second goal came.

Showing amazing speed, Rukavytsya left Angelo Costanzo in his wake, was left one-on-one with the `keeper and drilled it past Eugene Galekovic.

Fifteen minutes into the second half and Adelaide captain Dodd levelled the game with a magnificent strike from distance that Petkovic, in his second game back, couldn't reach.

Lazaridis then showed his quality despite a long time out of the game to set up Harnwell's seventh goal of the season and Perth's third of the game.

The former made a good run and passed it to Harnwell who calmly slotted it home with 30 minutes remaining.

Adelaide had one last chance to escape with a draw deep in injury time, receiving a free kick just outside the box, but the wall blocked Cassio's tilt at a first A-League goal.

Mitchell was delighted with the win, mostly because it rewarded the 8000 strong crowd that have stuck with the Glory.

Lazaridis impressed Mitchell but he did strain his hamstring, while Colosimo is far from a certain returnee for the final game.

"The fans have been coming week in, week out and it was crucial that we got a win for them," He said.

"There was a lot of commitment and desire from the players and that was evident out there.

"We gave silly goals away, but were able to come back, which was good.

"If Stan can play like that going forward there's a big chance he will be with us next year.

"Stan hurt his hamstring when he was crossing the ball to Jamie and it was important that we took him off straight away so that he didn't do any more damage to it.

"I'm not sure if Simon will be here or not next year, but he's done everything exceptionally well since I've taken over.

"I wanted to have a look at certain players, particularly Coyne and Robinson, in different roles if Simon is not here next year."

Adelaide coach Aurelio Vidmar wasn't disappointed in the approach of his side despite being out of the finals race, but was with the ease the Reds defence conceded goals.

"There wasn't much riding on it, just a lot of pride," he said.

"I can't complain about the endeavour of the players and scoring two goals away from home is pleasing, but at the other end we continually concede silly goals.

"It has been our Achilles heel all year. We are still the leading scoring team in the competition, but we have conceded just as many, so it's obvious where the problem is.

"It was quite deflating to not be in the hunt for the four. We've had four or five opportunities during the year, but never managed to take the next step in the crunch games."
