Staniforth helps NSW to victory

Scott Staniforth capped a memorable penultimate game for NSW with two tries as the Waratahs handed Scotland a 33-15 defeat at Aussie Stadium.

A second string Scottish side, in their final lead-up match to Sunday's first Test against Australia in Melbourne, tired in the second half to let NSW run away with the game.

Former Wallabies winger Staniforth, who will head to England to play with London Irish after the NSW match against the Pacific Islanders on June 25, was a standout, showing the skills that helped to earn him 72 state caps.

The outside centre opened up the scoring in the 11th minute when potential Scottish Test five-eighth Gordon Ross botched a clean-up from a kick before Staniforth set up winger Elia Tuqiri with a spectacular over the shoulder pass just before the break.

It took the score to 12-10 in favour of the home side after Scottish prop Joel Brannigan had scored a pushover try in the 18th minute.

Following a five-pointer to NSW debutant Peter Hewat, Staniforth scored 11 minutes after the break as the Waratahs went out to a 26-10 lead.

Winger Stephen Cranston then got the visitors in striking distance but Eastwood halfback Tim Donnelly consigned the Scots to their second loss in Australia on this tour with a individual effort 16 minutes from time.

The match gave little insight into what Australia might expect at the Telstra Dome on the weekend with Ross, who started in the 38-3 win against Samoa in Wellington on Friday, the only likely player to challenge for a starting berth.

While a competent kicker, the Leeds Tykes No.10 looked less assured with the ball in hand and may lose out to Sydney-born Dan Parks for the pivot's role against the Wallabies.
