Carlton and Collingwood named their captains to return from long-term injuries this weekend, but Geelong suffered an unexpected blow in losing its skipper.

In a significant blow, the Cats will be without Steven King for Sunday's match with the Kangaroos due to a hamstring injury.

Former Hawk David Loats will make his Cats debut in place of King while the Kangaroos have regained Glenn Archer from an arm infection.

The Brisbane Lions named Chris Scott after chronic groin problems for his first game of the season in Saturday night's much-anticipated visit to take on Essendon.

The Lions dropped Jared Brennan, while Blake Caracella (shoulder), Craig McRae (hamstring) and Shaun Hart (quadriceps) were given another week to recover from injury.

The Bombers regained David Hille from a calf injury, and had mixed news on their concussion cases - Joe Misiti recovered but Jason Winderlich was out.

St Kilda regained Brett Voss (broken jaw) and Xavier Clarke (thigh) as it seeks to return to the winners' list against the Western Bulldogs on Saturday.

The Bulldogs recalled ruckman Peter Street plus Cameron Faulkner and Jordan McMahon, with veteran forward Simon Garlick dropped.

Port Adelaide's final 22 for Sunday's visit of Sydney remains uncertain, with several injury doubts named in the 25-man squad: Josh Carr (broken jaw), Adam Kingsley (knee) and Chad Cornes (groin).

The Swans will regain Nick Davis from a sprained ankle, but have lost injury-prone ruckman Jason Ball to a hamstring strain.
