Fevola still confident about a new deal

Carlton full-forward Brendan Fevola remains confident he will soon sign a new contract with the AFL club, despite speculation the negotiations might be postponed.

The issue came to a head after Fevola's poor game last Friday night against St Kilda, with coach Brett Ratten declaring that the club would offer players only so much to stay.

Fevola rang a radio station on Saturday afternoon to declare he wanted to stay with the Blues, following media speculation about an offer from Sydney.

"All I've done is stated that I want to stay at the club and that's still how I feel," he said.

"I want to be there and hopefully it gets done in the next week or two, or however long it takes.

"Hopefully it gets done sooner (rather) than later."

The Carlton board are set to discuss Fevola's future again next Monday night.

But Fevola also said he would accept negotiations being put off until the end of the season.

"That'd be alright," he said.

Fevola also again defended his gesture of hugging and chatting happily with some Saints players immediately after Friday night's loss.

Commentator Nathan Buckley strongly criticised Fevola and Ratten was also unimpressed.

"I barracked for St Kilda as a kid and I looked over at Robert Harvey, he was standing on the 50 (metre mark) and I thought `if he retires, I won't get a chance to go up and shake his hand on a football field again'," Fevola said.

"He was my idol, I had pictures all up on the wall of him, so I thought I'd go up and just shake his hand and give him a hug, say how much I've appreciated his football.

"That was pretty-much it."
