Wests Tigers skipper Robbie Farah is on track to play in Saturday's Foundation Cup against the Sydney Roosters after he was given clearance by his back specialist.

Farah was expected to miss the entire pre-season after off-season back surgery but after a few weeks of strong training the star hooker is likely to make a cameo appearance before the NRL season starts next month.

A decision on whether he will face the Roosters on Saturday won't be made until the day of the game and will depend on how the 25-year-old recovers from training.

If Farah is ruled out it is anticipated he will play in the Tigers' final pre-season hit-out against NSW Cup side Shellharbour on March 6.

"Wests Tigers hooker Robbie Farah will be given until an hour before kick-off as to whether he plays in the Foundation Cup on Saturday, February 21," said a club statement.

"Farah has seen a specialist about his back and will undergo a final fitness test to see whether he takes the field for the clash against the Sydney Roosters."

Meanwhile new Bulldogs coach Kevin Moore named recruits Ben Hannant, Michael Ennis, David Stagg, Josh Morris, Michael Hodgson and Brett Kimmorley in his starting side to play St George Illawarra at WIN Stadium on Saturday.

Ex-Brisbane trio Hannant, Ennis and Stagg, plus former Titan Hodgson provide a new look pack for the Bulldogs alongside skipper Andrew Ryan and young backrower Gary Warburton.

Moore said his main concern for the trial was building team chemistry as the Dogs prepare to face NRL premiers Manly in round one.

"Our focus this weekend will be to look at combinations and build some cohesion," he said.

Melbourne named a near-full strength side for their clash with Newcastle on Saturday with Test representatives Billy Slater, Cameron Smith, Jeff Lima, Adam Blair and Greg Inglis all selected to play.
