Sydney Swans groom more Rising Stars

Sydney's current AFL Rising Star Dan Hannebery reckons the Swans may have unearthed a couple of likely candidates for this year's title.

The 20-year-old midfielder is one of several youngsters to have added zip to a Sydney side that was heavily populated with veterans towards the end of the last decade.

Forward Sam Reid and utility Gary Rohan, both 19, are among the club's Generation Next who have earned kudos this year and could be Rising Star contenders, according to Hannebery.

"Sam Reid is on fire at the moment, he took a few big marks on the weekend," Hannebery said on Tuesday.

"Gary Rohan, the red headed rooster, is on fire a bit at the moment, so we could see him running down the wing this week and hopefully he gets a nomination.".

Hannebery is looking forward to catching up this weekend with the latest Rising Star nominee, West Coast midfielder Luke Shuey.

They were teammates at Oakleigh Chargers before heading in opposite directions.

"He's a really good fellow and he's going to be a good player," Hannebery said.

"I've been playing a bit inside, a bit outside, so I'm sure I might cross him at some stage, that will be good.

"I haven't really played against him before, so I'm looking forward to playing against him and hopefully knocking him off.

"He's finally been injury free this pre-season which is good for him, he's had a pretty unlucky ride with injuries."

Despite having won the prestigious award, Hannebery said he hadn't yet come in for increased attention from opposing teams.

"We've got Ryan O'Keefe, Jarrad McVeigh, Kieren Jack - those guys are pretty important players as well," Hannebery said.

"There's a lot of different players in our side that are going to attract attention from other sides and if it comes I'm sure I'll have a chat to a few of the players and coaches, but I haven't really received any increased attention yet."
