Souths to keep Sutton waiting on new deal

John Sutton's manager admits the South Sydney five-eighth's future is still very much in the air, with the NRL club undecided about whether they want to keep him.

Suttton is off-contract at the end of the year and although manager Steve Gillis said he's unconcerned at the moment, he revealed a decision is unlikely to be made before Souths announce their new coach.

"They are still working out what they are going to do with coaches and that kind of thing," Gillis told AAP.

"We are not too concerned right now, nothing is going to change dramatically in the next five weeks or so and we've only played five rounds."

Wigan's Michael Maguire and St George Illawarra mentor Wayne Bennett have been linked with the job, and speculation has been rife that Bennett met with Souths owner Russell Crowe about taking over from John Lang, who will stand down at the end of the year.

Gillis said he was unaware of rumours Bennett had told the club not to re-sign Sutton and Chris Sandow if they wanted him to take over and said Souths chief executive Shane Richardson had indicated the club did not want to lose Sutton.

However, he did confirm there had been interest for his services from other clubs.

"The club haven't told me anything like that, they don't know who the coach will be yet so I find it unlikely," he said.

"I don't know who out there would be much better than John Sutton.

"There is some interest in him, but he wants to stay at Souths and that is what he has told them.

"I have had discussions with Richo, and nothing is on hold, we are still talking, it is just these things take time but there is no rush just yet.

"It is only round five. If you go through the rosters of all the clubs there are a lot of (unsigned) high-profile players like Jamal Idris out there so we are not too worried."

One club who will not be chasing Sutton are Parramatta, with chief executive Paul Osborne denying they aren't interested in the 26-year-old.

"He's not on our radar at all, we've got no interest in going down that path," Osborne told AAP.
