Alfie Langer gets his own statue

It's bright maroon, stands about 30 centimetres tall and has a white No.7 painted on its back.

And just like the champion player it represents - former halfback great Allan Langer - the Queensland's plaster mascot nicknamed ALFO (Allan Langer Future Ornament) is providing plenty of laughs for the Maroons State of Origin players.

Langer was a genius on the football field.

But his antics off the field were always regarded as a big part of Queensland's Origin success.

They they still are.

As another Queensland icon Darren Lockyer prepares to pass his milestone as the most capped Origin player in history at ANZ Stadium in Sydney on Wednesday night, the plaster gnome-sized statue is keeping the laughs flowing 25 years after the pint-sized Langer defied his critics in the first of his 34 games in the maroon No.7 jumper.

The Alf-like figure goes everywhere with the the team - breakfast, lunch, training, dinner and even social engagements.

It went to Emerald for a fan day on Wednesday but needed some running repair work at Maroochydore Airport after team media manager and former Origin prop Andrew Gee kicked it and smashed it.

Glued and taped back together it made an appearance at lunch in honour of the players where team manager Steve Walters explained its purpose.

"Alf's basically just a blow fly now, he's forgotten," laughed Walters.

"I've known him for 40 years and all this talk about statues for Lockyer beside the King (Wally Lewis) have affected him.

"We've got this team mascot called ALFO and once Lockyer gets his statue, we thought the least we could do for Alf is super glue this one beside the King and Locky at Suncorp Stadium.

"If any of you ever go to a game at Suncorp Stadium in the future and you see little ALFO there, just say hello ... that'll be Alf's statue on behalf of the players."

Gee said all the players were all behind Langer getting his own bronze statue.

There was no player betterthan geeing up his team mates than Langer.

"Alf loves it because he knows it's the start of a campaign to get his statue, it's going to snowball from here," Gee said.

"One of the great things about Alf is that he can laugh at himself, he's one of the best."
