Cats lose rookie Reynolds for season

Geelong rookie Joel Reynolds has been ruled out for the season with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

The 22-year-old former Essendon Bomber suffered the injury in a VFL practice match on Sunday, when he fell awkwardly after taking a mark in the last quarter.

Scans confirmed he will see no further action in 2007.

Reynolds, who played 38 games in five seasons at the Bombers before arriving at Geelong, will undergo surgery on Saturday and will require a knee reconstruction.

"It's very disappointing for him and it's very disappointing for us as well. He was going quite well I thought," Cats football operations manager Neil Balme said.

Geelong captain Tom Harley, who was rested for last week's NAB Cup semi-final loss to the Brisbane Lions, was listed on the club's injury list as suffering "general soreness".

But Balme said Harley was still expected to play in Saturday's practice match against Melbourne at Skilled Stadium.

In other injury news, St Kilda co-captain Nick Riewoldt has been diagnosed with back soreness after he pulled out of last week's practice match against Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium.

Richmond pair Troy Simmonds and Matthew Richardson remained on track for round one of the home-and-away season, according to football manager Paul Armstrong.

Simmonds has an ankle injury and was listed as two weeks away from returning.

He will not play in Friday night's practice match in Mildura and it is doubtful Richardson, who has a hamstring injury, will make the trip to Victoria's north west either, Armstrong said.

"It looks that unlikely he'll have a hit out before round one," Armstrong said.

"His training form will dictate when he plays."

Friday night's practice match is the second year in a row the Tigers will play in Mildura.

Last year, the club took on Essendon in a match played in memory of six teenagers who died in a road accident.

"We've got a strong link with Mildura from days gone by ... we're more than happy to go up there again," Armstrong said.
