Sydney FC match postponed until Thursday

Sydney FC's Asian Champions League group match with Persik Kediri has been postponed until 1.30pm (AEST) on Thursday after monsoonal conditions left Indonesia's Manahan Stadium heavily waterlogged.

The flooded Solo City pitch delayed the scheduled 1800 AEST kick-off by half an hour, then an hour, before match officials re-scheduled the game for Thursday afternoon.

Sydney need all three points from this fixture to keep pace with Group E leaders Urawa Reds of Japan, with only the top team from each group progressing to the quarter-finals.

Persik Kediri stunned Shanghai Shenhua 1-0 in only slightly better conditions at Manahan Stadium last month - the solitary goal too difficult for the Chinese club to counter in the slosh - so Culina knew rain would not suit his men.

Easing showers are forecast for Thursday, with temperatures headed for 30C, so the inaugural A-League champions will have oppressive humidity to contend with at best.

"The heat we can handle, but the rain and the humidity are the danger. That doesn't play into our hands at all," Culina said.

"The fact the boys don't really have any match fitness because - other than a friendly with (NSW Premier League side) Marconi last week - they haven't really played a top level game for three weeks, that's a real concern.

"Add to that the playing surface is, at best, average, and the fact the crowds can be very hostile - there are quite a few things going against us."

Sydney FC are unbeaten so far in their first Asian campaign, following a 2-1 away win over Shanghai Shenhua and 2-2 draw with Urawa Reds at Aussie Stadium.

The Reds, also unbeaten, are equal on four points with Sydney, but head the group thanks to a superior goal difference of four.

"I can't be worried about goal difference at this stage of the tournament, but we need a win, there's no doubt about that," added Culina, who has not lost a match since taking over from Terry Butcher as coach in an interim capacity in February.

"We go in expecting to win and believing we can win, just like every game when I'm in charge. We want maximum points."
