No brotherly love in Dragons-'Dogs clash

St George Illawarra fullback Brett Morris can only wish he had the time to dream about getting one over twin brother and Bulldogs centre Josh in Saturday night's NRL trial at WIN Stadium.

Going up against his identical sibling for the first time since the days of footy on their knees in the family living room on the NSW south coast, it's a luxury Brett says he simply can't afford.

Foremost in Brett's thought is impressing new coach Wayne Bennett, with spots in the Dragons side for the round one clash against Melbourne at a premium.

"Definitely," said Brett when asked if there was a fear he could be squeezed out for the trip south of the border.

"But that just makes you want to become a better player - you know you have to step up and play well every week because you know if you don't there's great players in the squad that can easily take your position."

Someone, somewhere, is going to miss out on a berth against the Storm.

Only former Test centre Matt Cooper seems assured of a starting spot, with the likes of Morris, Jason Nightingale, Chase Stanley, Queensland Origin winger Darius Boyd and dual international Wendall Sailor fighting it out jumpers one through five.

Throw in the possibility of captaincy candidate Ben Hornby returning to fullback if Jamie Soward and Mathew Head are the starting halves, and there are two players who could be very disappointed when Bennett reads out his team sheet for round one.

"There's a lot of depth at the club now and a lot of the blokes put in good performances against the Roosters (last's week's 54-6 trial win)," Morris said.

"It's definitely a fight for a spot in the team and everyone wants to be there round one. The trials are the best opportunity to put your hand up and try and get a starting spot."

But surely he's afforded himself a little daydream about stepping past his brother, who he's played alongside virtually his entire career, on his way to the tryline.

Maybe a chip and chase over Josh's head? Or a massive fend to the face as he evaded his brother's clutching arms?

"Not really," Brett said.

"Maybe if it was a round game - I think we play them round ten in the heritage game - there'll be a bit more feeling there.

"It's just a trial, everyone's just looking to do their own thing and worry about their own performances. They'll be doing the same thing - I don't think Josh will be too worried about me either."

But when you've been inseparable since the night you were conceived - something, surely?

"Maybe if I see him there I'll give him a cheeky little wink as I run around him or something."
