Dragons smash Warriors 29-4

Prolific St George Illawarra winger Brett Morris propelled himself to the top of the tryscorers list and the Dragons to the brink of the NRL minor premiership with another double in Sunday's 29-4 win over the Warriors.

Morris, who couldn't even break into the Dragons side at the start of the season, made it 17 tries from just 16 matches in 2009 as the joint venture club all but ended the Warriors' faint finals hopes.

The win left the Dragons four points clear at the top of the ladder with six games remaining.

Morris pulled one clear of Wests Tigers winger Taniela Tuiaki at the top of the tryscoring charts and within sight of Nathan Blacklock's club-record haul of 27 four-pointers in 2001.

But it was the player inside Morris who got most of the praise from Dragons coach Wayne Bennett, with Chase Stanley lauded by the man who this week allowed 20-year-old to walk away from the final year of his contract to link up with Melbourne in 2010.

Stanley, a late replacement for injured centre Matt Cooper, scored one try and set up another, Bennett saying the young three-quarter had responded the way he wanted after being banished to the NSW Cup earlier in the season.

"Chase got the opportunity today," Bennett said.

"He was great last week and he's really turned his season around from the way he started. It's a real credit to him.

"The players know if they do the right thing now I'll keep giving them opportunities. I just want them to play what I think they're capable of playing.

"He's come back and I think he's appreciated he's in a good footy team and wants to be a part of it."

While the scoreline suggests a one-sided game that would leave a coach smiling from ear to ear, Bennett was disappointed with the ball retention from his team, particularly in the second half.

The Dragons asserted their superiority just three minutes into the game with Morris scoring his first as he retrieved a cross-field kick from Jamie Soward, who finished with a personal tally of 13 points.

The Warriors hit back a couple of minutes later when Simon Mannering flicked an inside pass to centre Joel Moon to score.

But that was it as far as the Warriors went with Soward kicking a penalty to give the Dragons back the lead.

Morris got into the act again five minutes later when Stanley made the most of an overlap down the left wing before unloading to the flying winger for his second.

Stanley, who the Warriors were chasing earlier in the season, went from provider to finisher in the 28th minute as the Dragons registered their third try.

Neither side could get anything going after the break and it took a freakish piece of play from Soward to get the scoreboard moving again.

The NRL's leading pointscorer picked up a poor grubber kick from Ian Henderson and sprinted the length of the field to score.

Soward rubbed salt into Warriors' wound by kicking a pointless drop goal with four minutes left, which was followed by a long-range try from Test winger Darius Boyd for the former Bronco's well overdue first points as a Dragon.
