The Hurricanes have signed New Zealand Maori prop Ben May and have retained lock James Broadhurst and utility back Charlie Ngatai for another Super Rugby season.

Hurricanes coach Mark Hammett was delighted to have added the three players to his 2012 roster.

May was a very experienced prop at Super Rugby level, said Hammett, who had been looking to replace departing veterans Neemia Tialata and John Schwalger who would both play next year in France.

"To be able to acquire the services of Ben is fantastic for the franchise and he is really determined to make his mark at the Hurricanes," he said.

"We are also stoked that James and Charlie have decided to re-sign with the franchise. Both are young guys with great potential and will be an important part of building that next group of Hurricanes."

May, 28, who had played for the Chiefs since 2008 following a year at the Crusaders, said: "I am looking forward to working with Mark again and the new challenge that lies ahead."

After 16 appearances in two seasons with the Hurricanes, Broadhurst was keen to extend his time, saying: "Re-signing with the Hurricanes for another two seasons is a great opportunity for me. This year has helped me develop my game and I'm looking forward to the 2012 season."

Ngatai's first season in the full Hurricanes squad came to an abrupt end when he broke his ankle at the end of April in the win over Queensland.

"I am just looking forward to the opportunity and hopefully get more game time and can't wait to play next season," he said.
