Colosimo to captain Glory

Simon Colosimo has been handed the Perth Glory captaincy for the new A-League season, just weeks after almost leaving the club to play in Turkey.

At the Glory's season launch, Colosimo was revealed as the successor to former captain Jamie Harnwell.

With Perth play off in the pre-season final against Adelaide this weekend, hopes are growing of a resurgence in the west after two miserable seasons in the revamped A-League.

"There is a real buzz about the place and an air of confidence about the coming season and future of the club," said Colosimo, who recently returned from a four month loan stint at Turkish club Sivasspor.

"Perth Glory has a proud history and we are all committed to ensuring the club is again the benchmark of football in this country both on and off the field."

Joint winner of Perth Glory's best and fairest award last season, as well as best clubman, Colosimo and David Tarka were the likely candidates to take over from Harnwell.

Colosimo's international experience - and his central midfield position - convinced coach Ron Smith he was the man to lead this season's inexperienced squad.

"If you're going to have an influence on what happens on the field then that is the place you're best able to achieve that," Smith said.

"We have a fairly young side and Simon is someone our players can look to during matches to have a calming influence when things might not be going our way."

And after Glory's massive fall from grace in the last two seasons, following a triumph in the final National Soccer League championship, Colosimo said he was determined to bring success back to Perth.

"We have a tight knit squad and have built a strong club culture which can only lead to positive outcomes this season," Colosimo said.

"There are a number of players that have displayed natural leadership qualities and we'll all work together to ensure we're heading in the right direction.

"We are definitely not going to disappoint either the fans or ourselves this year."
