ACT scored tries just before and after halftime to set up a surprisingly easy 33-15 victory over Western Stormers of South Africa in the Super 12.

Success lifted the visitors from fourth position to first in the southern hemisphere inter-provincial rugby union championship table with 19 points, one more than the Bulls of South Africa.

Young lock Mark Chisholm took a pass from veteran Wallaby scrum-half George Gregan to barge over one minute before the break and give Brumbies a 16-10 advantage after a thrilling opening half.

And a superb pass under pressure from official man-of-the-match and centre Matt Giteau set up South African wing Clyde Rathbone for another Brumbies try just two minutes into the second half.

Fullback Joe Roff converted to give the Australian outfit a 13-point lead they never looked like surrendering although Stormers wing Pieter Rossouw had what appeared a legitimate try disallowed soon after.

As the Stormers faded fast, errors by fullback Gaffie du Toit and captain and flanker Corne Krige gifted loose forward George Smith a try which earned Brumbies a bonus point for crossing the line four times.

Replacement wing Tonderai Chavhanga scored a try on his Super 12 debut, but it was far too little far too late from the South Africans, who also lost at home to Wellington Hurricanes from New Zealand.

While the Brumbies executed the basics well and displayed flair in attack, the Stormers contributed to their downfall with a series of unforced errors and woeful line-out throwing by hooker David Britz.

Drafted in to improve a problem area since the start of the competition, Britz was continually penalised by New Zealand referee Steve Walsh for crooked throws and Stormers won less than 50 per cent of their put-ins.

The home team also failed to score with a place kick as fly-half Chris Rossouw missed five attempts and Du Toit one in perfect conditions before a 40,000 crowd at Newlands.
