Ere a star among All-Stars

Sydney Kings championship hero Ebi Ere lit up the national basketball league's first All-Star Game in seven years on Thursday night, spearheading the Eastern All-Stars' 129-126 win over the Western All-Stars.

Ere, whose fourth quarter heroics on Tuesday guided the Kings to grand final glory, scored 18 points and nine rebounds.

The Kings forward also soared with four huge slam dunks and had plenty of assistance from Wollongong duo Ben Knight and Darnell Mee with 19 and 18 points respectively.

Eastern trailed by three points at quarter-time, but turned things around in the second term to take a 66-63 lead to the break.

Ere fired up in the third quarter, helping his side to a 10-point lead, while Wollongong swingman Glen Saville impressed with his defence and 12 rebounds.

Despite big efforts from Western's Martin Cattalini (27 points) and John Rillie with 23, the closest their side could get was within three points inside the last 30 seconds without ever looking like snatching victory.

Ere said he was still on a high from Tuesday night's come-from-behind grand final victory, but was among many players who felt the timing of tonight's All-Star Game could have been better.

Most of those on show on Thursday night had not played in weeks and the rustiness showed, especially early in the match.

"Some of the guys were a bit out of shape so the game didn't go as good as it should have," Ere said.

Just over 2,000 people attended tonight's match at the 3,000-capacity State Netball Centre.
