Australia's Samantha Stosur has been knocked out of the Stuttgart Grand Prix with a first-round loss to Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands.

Krajicek served 13 aces to overpower Stosur 6-2 6-7 (2-7) 6-1.

Fifth-seeded Patty Schnyder eased into the second round by beating Chanda Rubin 6-2 6-2.

Switzerland's Schnyder, an Australian Open quarter-finalist, took a 2-1 career head-to-head lead over America's Rubin by dominating both sets.

The indoor tournament has been hit by the injury withdrawals of many tops stars, with Ana Ivanovic the latest to join the list.

The Serb hurt her shoulder in practice on Sunday.

Other players who withdrew earlier included Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin-Hardenne, Maria Sharapova, Lindsay Davenport and Serena and Venus Williams.

Amelie Mauresmo is the top-seeded player, followed by Svetlana Kuznetsova, Elena Dementieva and Nadia Petrova. They all have a bye into the second round.
