Samantha Stosur started off her French Open campaign with an easy first-round victory over Jamea Jackson of the United States.

Stosur, the No.27 seed, took just 55 minutes to beat Jackson 6-1 6-2 at Roland Garros to set up a second-round clash with either Maria Kirilenko of Russia or Italy's Maria Elena Camerin.

Her victory continues a strong run on clay for the Australian, who upset Amelie Mauresmo in the second round of the Italian Open earlier this month.

It was also her second victory against Jackson, having won their only other meeting - a three-setter in the round of 16 in Pittsburg in 2004.

Stosur broke Jackson in the fourth game of the opening set after rain had delayed the start of their match by about four hours.

The Australian won the next game to love with an ace for a 4-1 lead and broke Jackson in the following game before holding serve with a sharp backhand down the line to close out the set.

Stosur broke Jackson in the opening game of the second set and again in the third to race to a 3-0 lead just as the rain started to fall again.

The match was suspended with Stosur down 15-30 in the fourth game of the second set.

The players returned to the court after more than an hour and a double fault by the Australian handed Jackson her first break of the match.

Stosur broke back immediately when Jackson hit a forehand into the net.

The 23-year-old Stosur held serve but had to wait until her next service game to close out the match when Jackson sent a backhand long.
