Islanders crush hapless Waratahs

The Pacific Islanders flexed their muscle as they overpowered a disappointing NSW side 68-21 in their rugby match at Aussie Stadium.

For Matt Burke, it was a farewell game he'd rather forget, with the Waratahs skipper hardly seeing the ball in his 115th and last game for NSW before he heads over to England to play club rugby with Newcastle.

But there was little the Waratahs could do to stop the onslaught from the tourists as they ran in ten tries to three in their final warm-up before next Saturday's Test against Australia in Adelaide.

The size and strength advantage of the Pacific Islanders was obvious as they dominated from the outset, with No.8 Sisa Koyamaibole barging over from close range in the fifth minute.

Winger Sitiveni Sivivatu made a great covering tackle to deny NSW fullback Peter Hewat from scoring in the corner soon after, but from then on the Pacific Islanders turned on the razzle dazzle to put the game away early.

They crossed for five tries in the space of ten minutes from the 16th minute, spreading the ball from one side of the field to the other, throwing flick passes inside and out in the style of play the Pacific Island nations have become renowned for.

NSW hit back with tries to dumped Wallaby centre Morgan Turinui and flanker Tim McGann late in the half, which were both converted by Burke.

But another scintillating try after the halftime siren, when Sivivatu regathered a long kick before passing to unmarked centre Selala Mapusua to cross over under the posts, gave the visitors a commanding 49-14 lead at the break.

Turinui capped off a bad week when he left the field on the medicab just before halftime after reeling from a tackle with what appeared to be a head knock.

Waratahs winger Milton Thaiday crossed early in the second half to add some respectability to the scoreboard, but when Burke's lack of pace denied him a try in the 52nd minute, the NSW comeback was over.
