Maroons opt for a new 'old' approach

Queensland have opted for an 'old style hooker', 'one tough nut' and a player who throws fear in to the opposition', to answer there Origin woes.

Scott Sattler (Panthers), Mick Crocker (Roosters) and Matt Bowen (Cowboys) are the 3 rookie Maroons who will make there debut against New South Wales on Wednesday week.

Maroons Chairman of Selection Gene Miles is confident that the new mix will be a succesful one for the boys north of the border.

Bowen has been named on the bench to possibly counter New South Wales shock weapon Craig Wing.

Bowen can play Halfback, Five-Eighth Wing or Fullback. Which could be dangerous for the blues who then have to contend with Darren Lockyer joining the backline.

Sattler was described by Miles as 'One tough hombre' who had been knocking on the door of Origin selection for several years. The 31 year old Sattler is the oldest Origin Rookie since Arthur Beetson since Origins inception back in 1980.

Mick Crocker was brought into the side as replacement for the injured PJ Marsh. "His defence is spot on and his attack great. But Crocker is tough and he can kick goals. He's an old fashioned hooker compared to P. J." Miles said.

"I'll try to tighten up the ruck and hopefully get a couple of shots on the Blues," he said.

The switch of Carroll to the centres meant there was no place for veteran Newcastle star Robbie O'Davis because wingers Shannon Hegarty and Matt Sing played so well in Origin I. O'Davis was a first-choice winger for Origin I but pulled out because of a knee injury.
