Waugh is Over

It was the best of days, it was the worst of days. The best because Tugger showed us that he's going out on top of his game, despite fears that he had pushed it too far. The worst because the day we have all been dreading finally arrived.

Yes folks, that famous baggy green cap, faded and torn, has been hung up. The iconic red rag will no longer be poking out of Stephen's trouser pocket as he grinds his way to another hard fought ton. And the squinting, analytical eye will no longer cast an imposing look into the depths of an oppostion's soul.

While the test didn't start - or finish - the way any of us would have liked, Stephen Waugh gave us what we all wanted to see : another innings of resolute, determined defence, mixed with flashing cuts, drives, and on-side brilliance. He's still got it, and i dare say he would have been the first picked for next month's tour of Sri Lanka.

Throughout his career, Stephen has epitomised the Australian spirit. His 'never say die' attitude has rubbed off onto the adoring Australian public, returning to us the patriotism that seemed to go missing through the late 80's and early 90's. And so it was that in his final innings, he fought us out of a potential hole to save the series.

What Stephen Waugh will do now is anyone's guess. Commentary seems below a man of such high esteem at this early stage. And while every team across the world would kill for his expertise in their coaching ranks, it seems that this is not his priority. He has been a fantastic philanthropist and humanitarian throughout his career, and it would be logical that this would be where his immediate path will lead. But let's not forget his loving family to which he owes so much - including young Rosie who so many of us wished had just kept quiet that morning at the breakfast table.

Whichever path Tugger takes, it matters not to the majority of Australians across this vast land. He has given us all the best years of his life in carving out a truly remarkable career built on dedication to the cause, determination to not let anyone down, and most of all a stout heart which will be revered as much as Phar Lap's.

Stephen Rodger Waugh, from all of us across your country, we thank you for the memories, the highs, the lows, and the trophies. Australia would be a vastly different place without you. You are everyone's hero, and as sad as it is to see you go, the SCG this week could not have been a more fitting farewell.

  • Great article Clint. I too have loved Steve Waugh for all 18 years of his career. The only criticism being the poor behaviour and arrogance of his team at times, which, along with all the good, will be part of his legacy.
