Around the Wicket - Some Random Thoughts

Is it my fault that I can’t get excited by a 3 match one day series between Australia and Bangladesh, smack bang in the middle of footy finals? Not that my team is playing, but still… it’s the vibe of the thing. Anyway, in the space of 7 days in Darwin, we will find out precisely nothing about the Aussies, and Bangladesh will be humiliated again. However, the ICC reckons it’s good for the game that Bangladesh gets humiliated over and over – so we’ll back their judgement. We all know by now that the ICC doesn’t ever get anything wrong.

I suppose that Bangladesh would be thanking whatever deity they pray to that Brett Lee is having “family issues” – which is a polite way of saying his missus allegedly, that’s allegedly (which means that I don’t know for sure if that happened or not, and I certainly are not implying that it did) had an affair with some bloke in Brisbane and they split up. Allegedly. The Banglas would be hoping that it’s contagious and a few of the rest of the Aussies catch it – because even the kids down at the Institute of Sport gave Mashrafe Mortaza and his mates a spanking. Pants down and all.

It’s going to be a debacle folks. No two ways about it. But then, those happen all around the world these days – like the South Africans getting slaughtered by the Great Unwashed. Bowled out for 80-odd? Seriously, how can that happen? How? Anyway, I see Herschelle Gibbs was playing, and made less than 20. But I’m sure that has nothing to do with anything.

So – anybody out there actually playing cricket this season? Have you started training? My answers are yes, and yes. Our season starts on October the 11th, and barring unforseen circumstances, this blogger will once again be a middle order wicketkeeper/batsman in the 2nd grade. I won’t over indulge on it, but I do plan on using this blog to be just a little self-indulgent and bring a few reports from the Tallangatta seconds to Around the Wicket.

Before I depart – I must thank Woz for doing a little update on the front page here. You may have noticed that I have been claiming to be operating Around the Wicket over the last 3 or 4 months, and the front page of the website was claiming that I was still bowling Over the Wicket. Well, happily – that’s been rectified now – and I can confirm that I am definitely coming Around the Wicket.

  • I agree with you. The tour should have been in early July combined with test matches. I guess the West Indies tour and Cricket Australia not wanting to schedule this tour against the Olympic we have what we have now.

  • I would be all for Bangladesh playing Australia A instead... I'm not convinced anybody gains anything out of a 3 match ODI series between Australia and Bangladesh.

  • ahh, around the wicket, congrats :O)

Craig starts cricket this weekend, they've moved their team to first grade cause they won last year, but they don't have training sessions... not saying they don't need training though, there are just no leadership groups making them train, so they all prefer to go fishing, actually, they only get together away from the game to watch the Newcastle Knights, but I do believe Craig needs some catching practice this year.

  • Ha! I don't know if we have a leadership group at our club or not. I hope not. I know we definitely don't have "optional" training sessions.

  • An Aussie 'A' Team would have been more interesting, but I guess we do have to play the Bangers at some stage. Might as well get it over and done with.

Speaking of over & done with, no cricket for me this season. Shift work, kids & health issues get in the way of all the fun. I do plan to drink heaps of rum & watch the lads play though.
