For the love of Beer

Lets be honest. As much as we may not want to admit it we all know that a lot of rugby league players can get almost any girl they want, in Sydney anyway. But they don’t seem to realise that this doesn’t mean they can get whatever they want from them.

I’m not going to lie, I am not a Manly fan and I have taken some enjoyment out of the clubs current crisis, and to be honest I think Manly hasn’t coped it too badly. The media is under the deluded belief that Manly set the standard in off field behaviour last year but they are obviously forgetting about the clubs wife basher who this year became a bit of a Judas by bashing a club sponsor.

That is not my issue, my problem is the arrogance of the players towards an alcohol ban.

There is no doubting that Michael Phelps, Stephanie Rice and Usaine Bolt are elite athletes. You could probably bet good money that they don’t spend every weekend getting pissed when they have to compete in less than seven days. So why do rugby league or any other footy players? Because they are not elite athletes!

Personally I don’t care that these guys are not elite even though they may consider themselves so, and I don’t care how important alcohol is to be to them. But the reaction of some players proves to me that the right to a beer is more important to them than playing the game they claim to love.

I don’t believe there should be an alcohol ban, it is not fair to the decent players that may still exist. I do however think there should be no more second chances. All the players have seen what the players and clubs before them have been through so there are really no more excuses. If a player acts up show them the door. No player is bigger than the NRL and it’s about time the code realises this.

We should thank Stewart however for temporarily getting the NRL’s pathetic ad campaign off TV. In a time when the clubs are struggling for money why is the NRL wasting $1.5million on an ineffective and uninspired commercial.
